A Glimpse of Loanwords of China English in The New York Times:Taking Fengshui and Guanxi as Examples
Introduction:Xu(2010)proposedthat"therearethreecatego-ries of China English (CE)lexis:Chinese loanwords in English;nativized Chinese English words;and common English words that are shared by the majority of English speakers including speakers of CE."In the present study,loanwords adopt the following definition that excludes the loan translations:"morphemic importation without substitution"(Haugen,1950).Yang (2005)explained that in re-lation to English in China,"morphemic importation without substitu-tion refers only to the introduction of the spelling of a Chinese term in Pinyin,the system for transliterating Chinese ideograms into the Latin alphabet,rather than the introduction of a Chinese term in characters."Examples based on Putonghua were given by Xu (2010):yamen,dazibao,fen,yuan,fenghuang,fengshui,gan-bei,ganbu,guanxi,maotai,Pinyin,pi-pa,renminbi,and Man-darin.Fengshui and guanxi were selected as subjects because they feature present Chinese culture and contain rich meaning,which are suitable for studying,not that old fashioned and out-of-date,like yamen and dazibao;not a unit,like fen and yuan;not just a name of a certain object,like maotai and pi-pa;and not that popular e-nough,like renminbi,etc.
