Recognize the Chinese Dream in Rethinking the American Dream
Editor”s Note:Ever since reform and opening up in 1978,mass culture in China has produced an unending series of cultural imaginings of the US.From the passionate longing for the blue ”maritime” civilization represented by River Elegy,a TV series shown in the 1980s,through the early 1990s TV series A Native of Beijing in New York,telling of the tribulations experienced by a group of Chinese setting up a business in the US,to the 2013 film American Dreams in China,showing how some Chinese businessmen realize their American dream when they list their business in the US—all these serve to indicate how America has become,in the past 30 years and more,the major coordinate structuring the cultural psychology and values of quite a few Chinese.A forum titled ”The Imagined America of Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture” was held by the Youth Arts Forum of the China National Academy of Arts on June 30,2013.
