Lu, Shuying.Breast milk and cow's milk: The role of and reconfiguration of modern Chinese motherhood, 1895-1837
The gradual popularization of baby formula in China during the Republican era, while affording some women the opportunity to pursue professional careers, also left many vulnerable to accusations of betraying traditional ideals of responsible motherhood, which emphasized the importance ofbreastfeeding. This highly interesting chapter of China's recent past had received limited scholarly attention until Dr.Lu Shuying's book.Lu successfully chronicles how baby formula came to eclipse breast milk in urban areas of China,a process that granted Chinese women who were no longer willing to breastfeed an alternative method to nourish their infants.
