Xu, Xiaoqun, Trial of Modernity: Judicial Reform in Early Twentieth-Century China, 1901-1937
In Trial of Modernity,Xiaoqun Xu uses many examples and much detail to describe the early 20th-century Chinese judicial reform that ambitiously followed Western models. The aim of the book is to evaluate the reform, its implications and its effects on everyday life in China by comparing the reform regulations issued by the central government with their actual implementation at lower bureaucratic levels.Throughout the book,Xu gives reasons for the successes and failures of the reform measures.
