Lu, Weijing, True to Her Word: The Faithful Maiden Cult in Late Imperial China
In this book,Weijing Lu focuses on a special group in Chinese history-girls who entered into engagements with men but never had the opportunity to start a sexual and familial relationship because their intended had died. These girls were called “faithful maidens.” In late imperial China, thousands of ”faithful maidens” took their own lives after their fiancés” deaths,or in many cases they took up cloistered lives in order to sustain their fidelity to the lost husband.
