The title of this book,Tears from Iron,derives from an illustrated booklet by two contemporary Chinese philanthropists, Xie Jiafu and Tian Zilin, which graphically depicted what was undoubtedly one of China”s greatest natural disasters,the so-called “Incredible Famine of 1877-1878” (dingwu qihuang) in northern China.Edgerton-Tarpley”s book is the first major study in any language of this devastating famine,in which as many as 13 million people perished.
