Mathew A.Foust and Sor-hoon Tan, eds., Feminist Encounters with Confucius
Previous dialogues between feminism and Confucianism have been adversarial, but recent conversations aim at cross-fertilizing.The last century witnessed feminist critiques of Confucianism because the latter was the foundation of Chinese patriarchy and hence became the cause of women”s degradation.Defenders of Confucianism argued against this idea and provided textual evidence to prove that Confucians did not have a unified stance towards women.Confucian thought is richly diverse:both sexist-oppressive ideas and sexual-equal opinions are part of it.1 Enlightened by this, contemporary scholars have launched conversations between Confucianism and feminism by comparing their similarities and differences.2 Their discussions promote cross-cultural feminist studies to a new level with scholars reflecting, revisiting, and reinterpreting Confucian canonical texts to engage in modern feminist debates on homosexuality, women”s liberation, gender equality, and care ethics.
