XIA Kejun,A Waiting and Useless Nation: Zhuangzi and Heidegger”s Second Turn
The publication ofXia Kejun”s book marks an important event within Heidegger studies, and signifies the active engagement of Chinese academia on the frontier of research on Heidegger”s Black Notebooks. This book, therefore, attracted considerable attention even before its official publication. The Academia Sinica, for example, organized the workshop ”From Nazi Germany to Gelassenheit” in November 2016 for the discussion of Xia”s work.Unlike many debates which focus on Heidegger”s antisemitism as unveiled in this notebooks,Xia calls attention to the influence of Zhuangzi,as a Chinese thinker completely alien to the European-Greek tradition of philosophy,on the thinking of Heidegger in the period 1943-49.Xia tries to prove two things throughout his investigation:1) Zhuangzi,as well as Daoist philosophy, plays an important role in the ”second turn” in Heidegger”s philosophy, which has been made apparent only since the publication of the Black Notebooks;2) by discovering the influence of Zhuangzi and Daoism on Heidegger”s approach to the crisis of modernity,we can examine how Zhuangzi”s philosophy contributes to our contemplation of the crisis of the contemporary world.
