Introduction to the Special Theme on "Mind and Emotion in Comparative Perspective"
The word "mind" can have negative connotations for philosophers informed by modem Western debates between Cartesians and anti-Cartesians about the philosophy of mind.Mind evokes for such ears the idea of a "ghost in the machine" separated from the body, the emotions and the world.A more historically and interculturally informed approach,in addition to contemporary scientific studies of consciousness, indicates that this is one limited perspective that inadequately grasps the complexity of the event of mindfulness itself. It is questionable why this way of modeling reality should continue to be privileged even if only negatively in the form of anti-Cartesianism.This counterposition construes the duality of mind and body/emotion/world to be the dominant paradigm to be overcome and thereby maintains its aura.
