Stephen C.Angle, Contemporary Confucian Political Philosophy
Building on his earlier work on Chinese rights discourse and Neo-Confucian conceptions of sagehood,in his most recent monograph Steven Angle develops an account of contemporary Confucian political philosophy.His defense of "progressive Neo-confucianism" presupposes "a certain degree of convergence between Confucianism and the liberal tradition," but also accounts for "continuing differences from existing liberal values and institutions" (9).Angle is committed to integrating a liberal emphasis on universal human rights into contemporary Confucian discourse.By connecting these traditions,Angle opens up an important and timely debate.The arranged marriage between liberalism and Confucianism distinguishes this book from other recent competing attempts.
