This rich study of Su Shi蘇軾 in Zhiyi Yang”s Dialectics of Spontaneity contains five chapters,each one a far-reaching inquiry into a single aspect of his writings,ranging from the theory of artistic creation to Daoist alchemy.While grounded in previous scholarship,1 Yang”s study is also highly original,as she introduces many overlooked writings,while elucidating their philosophical paradoxes and stylistic subtleties with great verve and erudition.2 Because of the complexity of the book”s contents,I will first consider the chapters individually before turning to the theme of ”spontaneity” that ties them together.
