On ”The Troupe”May 5,2016New York University8 Washington Mews GalleryParticipants:Xudong ZHANG;WANG Anyi;Jing WANG;Shiqi LIAO;Wenjin CUI;XIE Jun;Cong ZHOU;Yifan CAO.Xudong Zhang:As usual,we”ll first invite Wang Anyi to discuss her work,”The Troupe.”Wang Anyi:I wrote ”The Troupe” in 1997.I had been ill the year before,and after taking some time off I began writing some short,relatively low-key pieces.As far as my novellas are concerned,this may be considered a short one.Usually,in the Chinese mainland,novellas are 30,000 to 50,000 characters long,with 50,000 characters being the most standard length.Personally I like to write them a bit longer,and most of my novellas are on the long side.
