The history and interpretation of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-76) has always been a contested area of scholarship--one that has been complicated by divergent framing of the event in China and in the West, presented in different historical contexts and examined from widely differed political stances.To what extent can the literary and artistic works produced in the decades after the Cultural Revolution help scholars and the general public understand the event?
