Vera Schwarcz, Colors of Veracity: A Quest for Truth in China, and Beyond
"If I make a moral judgment about what is truth, it may lead to genocide," said a student in a seminar on the "Problem of Truth in History" that Professor Vera Schwarcz taught at Wesleyan University (p.xii).The speaker, whom Schwarcz quotes in her book Colors of Veracity: A Quest for Truth in China, and Beyond, drew this conclusion from her reflections on the atrocities committed in Nazi Germany but apparently failed to distinguish between truth-seeking andsingle-minded ideological insistence, between morality and ideology itself.
