For example, Wong-Fillmore (1979) cites a learner (Nora) who used How-do-you-do-dese? as a gener alized question form: How-do-you-do-dese flower power? (What is flower power?), How-do-you-dodese in English? (What's this in English?) Formulas can be of two types:'patterns'are partially productive, as in the Nora example; 'routines'are freestanding formulas: e.g. have -a -nice -day. Wong - Fillmore (1979) argues that formulas are thesource for later analysed L2 knowledge. Krashen and Scarcella (1978) argue that they are independent of analysed knowledge.
