Land,People and Paean
The book Factory Girls:Voices from the Heart of Modern China, first published in 2008 by Spiegel&Grau, presents a genuine and vivid account of female migrant workers in a southern China boomtown—Dongguan of Guangdong Province.By weaving her own family history into this book, the author,Leslie T.Chang,a Chinese American, adopts quite an unusual approach to completing her story. She bases her book on a larger social context in that she rediscovers the migration of her own family. With a probe into the daily details in the lives of the migrant women, she tries to demonstrate the fundamental changes in Chinese national character—from the philosophy of collectivism to the increasing awareness of individualism, brought by the prosperity of economy along with the transformation of society. In this way, every character comes into being the participant of history, including Chang herself.
