Substitution is the replacing of a noun phrase or a whole clause by a single word.This is done in order to avoid repetition,or to make a text more cohesive.For example,in the following line from The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde,Algernon says:
I don't really know what a gorgon is like,but I am quite sure that Lady Bracknell is one.
