[metalanguage]
Metalanguage is the language that is used to talk about language,and is better known as terminology.There is some debate as to the value,for learners,of knowing metalanguage,especially grammar terms such as adjective,adverbial,auxiliary,etc.This is part of a larger debate as to the role of explicit knowledge in language learning.In the past,methods such as the direct method and audiolingualism rejected any role for explicit knowledge,and,by association,metalanguage.Since the advent of cognitive learning theory there has been a greater tolerance for talking about language in the classroom.However,no studies have convincingly shown that knowledge of metalanguage results in more successful language learning.For language teachers,though,it would be virtually impossible to talk about their subject without the use of metalanguage.
