Is Grammar Innate?
This question has been hanging over the language teaching profession for 50 years,without a decisive and generally accepted answer.This matters for language teachers,because if you think the answer is "yes",you teach one way;if you think the answer is "no",you teach in another way;and if you do not know,you are likely to teach in a muddled,mishmash sort of way.We need to base our teaching on fact,not fantasy,so a clear and principled answer is needed.It is the aim of this article to provide that answer.
