An exercise is an activity that involves the controlled manipulation of the forms of the language.This contrasts with more meaning-focused,and less tightly controlled,activities such as tasks.They are also usually written.In fact,they are often the written equivalent of drills.Closed exercises are those for which there is only one correct answer,and they are therefore popular with writers of workbooks,since they allow for self-checking,using a key.Open exercises,on the other hand,permit more than one possible answer.Personalization exercises-of the type:Write five true sentences about yourself using "used to"-are a kind of open exercise.
