Transformation ofGreat-Power Competition and NATO's Strategic Adjustment
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO)is a multilateral political and military alliance bounded by explicit collective defense obligations. It was established in April 1949 by the United States and a handful of European countries in response to the perceived threat posed by the Soviet Union.During the Cold War,NATO played its role mainly in Europe, which was the primary arena of US-Soviet competition. It mobilized European allies and built a mature strategic system to support the long-term US confrontation with the Soviet Union, which had a home advantage over the US.At the same time,it expanded the European allies'influence on the US and contributed to competition management.
