Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula: Opportunities, Challenges and Prospects
The DPRK-US Agreed Framework of 1994 and the September 19 Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks in 2005 once generated hope for settling the DPRK nuclear issue, but their implementation was stalled for a number of reasons, not least the change of administration in the US and the consequent policy adjustment. The recent summits between leaders of the DPRK and the US have generated a new opportunity for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but differences between the two sides are still stark and difficult to resolve. The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is possible, but it will not be a smooth process. The two sides shall learn from the history and avoid committing errors of the past.
