沙漠里的种子:论贝克特《终局》的人文关怀
@@ Samuel Beckett himself is often seen as a playwright of nihilism and fatalism. However, writing about despair and convincing it are opposite notions, the confusion of the two is quite dangerous. In fact, what makes his audiences so sympathetic with his works and holds him one of the most celebrated authors in the history of literature is precisely his humanism which paradoxically emerges through his superficial disguise of nihilism. Thus, although Endgame has been frequently acknowledged as the bleakest of his works, the play nevertheless flickers the brightest sparkles of promise. The love hate relationship of Hamm and Clov thoroughly represents Beckett's humanism that in a world "bereft of transcendent hope, without God, morality, and value [2]", a piece of conncetion with another people, no matter how tortuous it might be, keeps one alive.
